Research With Us

We regularly work with academics, early career researchers and postgraduate students, NGOs, and private and public sector researchers on research projects that aid the students of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Read our FAQs for a more detailed outline of what types of research we are able to collaborate on.

  • NZUSA engages in various research projects that have relevant value to students. Our research areas include but are not limited to: the history of the student movement; educational policy; educational history; educational practice; inclusive education; curriculum and assessment; quality assurance; student mobility; mental health and wellbeing; gender justice; accommodation and renting; transportation; sustainability; and many other topics.

  • The type of research project you are doing, the methodology it includes, and how you will publish it influences what ethical procedure you need to use, to research with NZUSA.

NZUSA follows the Research Association of New Zealand’s Industry Code of Practice for Social and Market Research, which is based off of the ICC/ESOMAR International Code on Market and Social Research.

If you are researching for a journal article, you must go through your institution’s Ethics Committee for approval. If your research is being written independent of an institution, it may need to be based on the ethics policy of an institution. Advice on this can be acquired from the Aotearoa Research Ethics Committee.

All research done in partnership with NZUSA is expected to comply with New Zealand law.

  • NZUSA regularly submits at national, regional and international academic seminars and conferences. We often invite postgraduate and early career researchers to work with us, to submit to leading events in research.

  • You are free to share our reports, statements, campaigning content, and research with others. As our work is under the typical copyright procedures, we encourage that you reference us when employing our content in accordance with the expected referencing procedures at your institution or research body.

  • NZUSA considers each proposal to facilitate or partner in research projects, individually. Some proposals of research may have to go to our National Council for approval from our members for endorsement.

Depending on the topic of the research, NZUSA may delegate the research to another student body at the local or national level.

If NZUSA is the appropriate student body to aid in the research, we will offer a variety of different pathways that suit the research. This might include endorsement, marketing, funding, publication, media releases, or public events.

If applicable, this will be agreed with each relevant researcher or research group, with the potential of a research agreement signed. All research is expected to comply with NZUSA’s Privacy Policy where relevant.

  • NZUSA does hire postgraduate and early career researchers on a regular basis. To see what researcher roles we have available, keep an eye out on our upcoming Vacancies page or email president@students.org.nz
